January Book Reads

January comes to an end and my reading goal shifted. Have you ever had one stack of books where you tell yourself you are going to read them and then you see another stack of books that look a little more appealing and reach for it instead.

Well, that's exactly what happened!

I started with a goal of reading 10 Nancy Drew books and the next thing I know I'm nose deep in a Sherrilyn Kenyon book! I just can't keep away.

On the bright side I read Nancy Drew 1-3 and then 4 Kenyon books. This brings Jan 2016 Books read to 8 out of 52! that's a great thing. If I read 8 books a month all year I will have read about 96 books!! That is amazing, but my goal isn't that high and I know I will get distracted and be busy, so let's drop that down a little.

I have 44 books to go and 11 more months. so as long as I stay reading 4 books a months I will reach my end year book goal on time.

Books read so far for the Year 2016!!

Nancy Drew Books:

1-The Secret of the Old Clock---------5 Stars
2-The Hidden Staircase-----------------4 Stars
3-The Bungalow Mystery--------------5 Stars

Sherrilyn Kenyon Books:

Bad Attitude (B.A.D. Agency Book 1) ----------3 Stars
Silent Truth (B.A.D. Agency Book 4 w/ Dianna Love) ------2 Stars
Unleash the Night (Dark Hunter 8) -------------- 5 Stars
The Guardian (Dark Hunter 20) ------------------ 5 Stars
Dream Chaser (Dream Hunter) ------------------- 5 Stars

On to the next month! February To Be Read List coming soon!!

Books I have to read in 2014

My goal, again, is to read 52 books at least and review them. I'm going to accomplish this and then some!! I can feel it in my bones!

Here are some on my list:

1.) All of the House of Night novels 2-11. I even have them sitting beautifully on my shelf waiting for my to start. After finishing the first I knew I was stuck.

Basic set up:
The House of Night series is set in a world very much like our own, except in 16-year-old Zoey Redbird's world, vampyres have always existed.  In this first book in the series, Zoey enters the House of Night, a school where, after having undergone the Change, she will train to become an adult vampire -- that is, if she makes it through the Change.  Not all of those who are chosen do.  It's tough to begin a new life, away from her parents and friends, and on top of that, Zoey finds she is no average fledgling.  She has been Marked as special by the vampyre Goddess, Nyx.  But she is not the only fledgling at the House of Night with special powers.  When she discovers that the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school's most elite club, is misusing her Goddess-given gifts, Zoey must look deep within herself for the courage to embrace her destiny--with a little help from her new vampyre friends.

187517042.) Anything and everything Diana Nixon. That woman never stops writing and producing some very great work and I'm hoping it will be another Love Lines book, but until then she has The Souls of Rain coming out.

Blurb:

The secrets of the heavens had always been carefully guarded. Until one day when the angels realized that what they used to believe in was nothing but a cruel game between heaven and hell.
And Claire’s life is a part of that game too….
She is a guardian angel. She always thought that her existence was perfect. But perfection is a very relative term, and no one is protected from making mistakes.
Everything changes the moment Claire gets a new assignment. Guarding humans has never been easy, and this time won’t be an exception.
Alan Rosenford is a spoilt party-boy, whose life is a hurricane of risk and adrenaline rush. His soul is damaged, his heart is bleeding, and there are so many things he prefers to keep private….
The words they have never said before ….
The sins they have never committed….
How much does forgiveness of the heavens cost?
Or maybe even the heavens make mistakes?...

64873083.) Fallen by Lauren Kate. Yes, I am one of the few people who hasn't read it, sue me.

Synopsis:

There’s something achingly familiar about Daniel Grigori.

Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Price’s attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah. He’s the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move.

Even Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce – he goes out of his way to make that very clear. But she can’t let it go. Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, Luce has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret...even if it kills her.

Dangerously exciting and darkly romantic, FALLEN is a page-turning thriller and the ultimate love story.

63396644.) Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick

Synopsis:
A SACRED OATH
A FALLEN ANGEL
A FORBIDDEN LOVE

Romance was not part of Nora Grey's plan. She's never been particularly attracted to the boys at her school, no matter how hard her best friend, Vee, pushes them at her. Not until Patch comes along. With his easy smile and eyes that seem to see inside her, Patch draws Nora to him against her better judgment.

But after a series of terrifying encounters, Nora's not sure whom to trust. Patch seems to be everywhere she is and seems to know more about her than her closest friends. She can't decide whether she should fall into his arms or run and hide. And when she tries to seek some answers, she finds herself near a truth that is way more unsettling than anything Patch makes her feel.

For she is right in the middle of an ancient battle between the immortal and those that have fallen - and, when it comes to choosing sides, the wrong choice will cost Nora her life

15829965.) City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare. Did you know that Cassandra Clare is a pen name? Just wondering. Another random bit of information is that Anne Rice's real name is Howard.

Synopsis:

Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what's normal when you're a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who's becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn't ready to let her go — especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary's only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil — and also her father.

To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings — and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace. How can Clary stop Valentine if Jace is willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?

In this breathtaking sequel to City of Bones, Cassandra Clare lures her readers back into the dark grip of New York City's Downworld, where love is never safe and power becomes the deadliest temptation.

1221336.) The Pit Dragon Trilogy by Jane Yolen.

Synopsis:
The adventures of young dragon master Jakkin Stewart are brilliantly chronicled in this epic fantasy--from his apprenticeship in Dragon's Blood, to his breathtaking escape with his beloved Akki in Heart's Blood, and straight through to their harrowing discovery in the third volume, A Sending of Dragons. Revered by devoted fans for more than twenty years, these first three volumes of Jane Yolen's fierce and fiery dragon tales are published together for the first time--in a handsome boxed set that's sure to win over legions of new admirers.

Book review: Born of Ice by Sherrilyn Kenyon

6434232
I have not yet read any of the other League books by Sherrilyn but she took me for a wonderful ride. The story moves pretty fast, but is easy enough to follow. There were a few moments when I had no idea what was going to happen next and I love it! I was at the edge of my seat asking the characters what were they going to do and hoping that Devyn didn’t actually throw Alix out the airlock for what she has to do to try and save her sister and mother--who are in prison and with a time restraint on their lives.

Alix, a  slave, must gain enough of Devyn’s trust to frame him and get him arrested because a long time ago his father-a very bad man (and I mean that in the kindest terms because he is such a badass awesome character)-turned in evidence that ruined Merjack’s ancestry and he wants his revenge. Devyn fits the bill.

Devyn is deadly and I swear there is no part of his blood that isn’t filled with assassin, martial arts badass, and all around kind hearted man who is, not only a pilot, but a doctor. Come on Sherrilyn, I mean really, can you make a less perfect man. And to top it off Devyn got blacklisted (if you will) because he saved a boy who was going to die nine years before the first chapter takes place. I can’t get enough of his character and I wish there was more fighting so I can see him in action, so to speak.

Alix was a great pairing for this fighter and with her past she could definitely use a man like him. She’s been treated like trash by her father who gave her to his crew for entertainment and didn’t even know what true pleasure was. She has done what she can to protect her family and now that her father is dead she still can’t be free unless she frames Devyn, a man who she is falling hard for and for the first time has treated her like a human being. Even after he finds out what she is up too he still becomes the honorable man he is and works to help her free her family, but the price is high.

This book is a bit shorter than a few of the other books by her, but it’s filled to the brim with everything I love out of a good book. A great story line, sexy men, dangerous characters, a heated romance scene (or two…), and an overall plot that keeps me wanting more!

Of course I give it a five out of five.

Review of Phantom in the Night by Sherrilyn Kenyon and Dianna Love.

This is the first book of the BAD series that I have read and I was pleasantly surprised by it. I had heard mixed reviews about the book, but I wasn't going to let that stop me from reading another one of Sherrilyn Kenyon’s works. I’m glad I read it and I will most likely begin reading author Dianna Love’s work soon after this. It really is a book I will add to my shelf of favorites. Now getting into the story…

You’re leading character is Special Forces member Nathan Drake who is quickly represented as a strong, self-sacrificing, and revenge seeking man after the death of his brother who sought out Nathan’s help in the beginning of the book for being tangled in the wrong crowd. Nathan later runs into Terri Mitchell, a new, gusty, female agent working for the Bureau of American Defense (BAD), who is working to bust an organized crime ring suspected of funding terrorism. The two of them end up crossing paths when the people Nathan is looking for are tied into Terri’s case.

Throughout the story--and many untrusting moments between both Terri and Nathan--they find themselves having to work together to not only survive, but to keep a threat from being unleashed on thousands of innocent people.

Without giving too much more information away I must say that it took me a little bit too really get into the story, but once chapter two was at my fingertips there was no shutting the book and walking away. The plot is thoroughly thought out with interestingly, well-rounded characters I would want to have conversations with. And a couple of characters I wouldn’t want to run into in a dark alley. I’m also glad to see that they mixed loads of action with the right amount of romantic flare. There were a few moments when the story was a bit much on the details, but you could keep up easily enough. Most of the time when I struggled to get the information clear in my head was because it was way past my bedtime!

The story does shift between POVs, which could be frustrating at times when you’re really into a character and you have to jump to someone else, but it’s not so bad as to take away from the book.

Sherrilyn Kenyon
All in all I have to give this book 5 stars.

Review Sherrilyn Kenyon’s book Devil May Cry

I just finished reading Sherrilyn Kenyon’s book Devil May Cry from the Dark-Hunter series for the second time and I couldn’t get enough of it! After reading several of her works it dosen’t surprise me in the least to learn that she has appeared on the Top Ten list of The New York Times, Publishers Weekly, and USA Today.
Devil May Cry 5 stars
Sin is an ancient Sumerian god whose powers were taken away by Artemis, who he has sworn to destroy if their paths ever crossed again. But he has bigger fish to deal with as the demon known as Gallus are hungry for humans. He is only one who has a chance to stop them, but when a mysterious woman looking like Artemis appears before him what’s a man to do other than hold her hostage and demand his powers back?
Now he has to decide whether he can shove his craving for revenge against Artemis aside long enough to accept her help, but the road of trust and betrayal is all too familiar to him. Before he knows it not only does the woman have his heart in her hands, but she may be just what he’s looking for to save his life when things get rocky, but can he trust her? Or will she abandon him?
I couldn’t put the book down. Even after reading it a second time I still feel like I can go back and read it again. Kenyon really puts you there in the moment. She tugs at your heart and as her characters struggle and come to realize you’re there bedside them feeling their pain or happiness. She really does know how to keep you wanting more, from her dashingly stunning characters, to her use of the Greek Gods and Goddesses; she leaves out no expense in depth.
Just read any of her books and I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
